The Collinson range of sports facilities have been developed to provide a feasible solution for each and every client’s specification and budget.

National specialists Collinson, offer a full design and build service to tailor their facilities to each individual project: perfect for schools, colleges, universities and clubs at all levels. So whether you would like to build a multi-sport facility, a centre of excellence, a swimming pool or an all-encompassing leisure hub, their structures provide an energy efficient and cost effective

solution.

Collinson’s inhouse team of designers, engineers, surveyors, pre-construction and project managers are there to guide and advise clients throughout the whole process. It’s evident from the company’s extensive portfolio that their ethos is to deliver first-class sports facilities on time and on budget.

Sport is, as we know, highlighted as a key factor in having a healthy lifestyle by the government campaigns which encourage the nation to get more active. This encouraging educational establishments are recognising the need for change and as a result, are upgrading their sports facilities to attract prospective students as well as to provide current students with top facilities and the space for physical activity and sport.

In 2012, York St John University set the wheels in motion to revolutionise their sporting provision. Having outgrown existing facilities, a new 57-acre site was acquired for the development of the new York St John Student Sport Park. Plans included a wide range of flood lit external courts and a state of the art sports centre comprising multi-sport courts, fitness suites, changing facilities, flexible teaching and conference space.

The university appointed specialist sports architects Watson Batty with a brief to design a modern facility that would cater for all needs. Richard Crowson, Architectural Technologist had previously worked with Collinson and had all the confidence that will Collinson would provide the ideal and cost- effective solution.

For the university’s multi-sport hall, Collinson’s ChallengerTM Tensile Structure was selected, including:

5 multi-sport courts.

Spectator Viewing Balcony.

Rebound and acoustic screening to enhance acoustic performance.

Architectural membrane to create a naturally lit space to play.

In terms of budget and specification the Challenger structure ticked all the requirement boxes. For a build of this nature, Collinson’s modern building methods of construction provided substantial cost and time savings for the build schedule - releasing manpower, energy and money for use elsewhere in the project.

Now complete, the university has an energy efficient, clear span sports facility with natural light and showcasing a modern distinctive build style.

Covering 42m x 25m, the Challenger facility accommodates five badminton courts with markings for a range of sports including basketball and five-a- side football. Accompanying the mail facility are three separate storage rooms that provide ample storage for equipment and a viewing balcony for safe spectator viewing.

The integration of Collinson rebound walling and Acoustik screening systems creates an aesthetically pleasing wall solution but, more importantly, improves and enhances the acoustic performance of the facility for the comfort of players, spectators and coaches. To mark proud ownership the Mark St John logo was printed on the external membrane cover.

Collinson worked on the project as a sub-contractor for Triton Construction, who designed and built the traditional building used to accommodate the fitness suite, changing facilities, classrooms and conference space. The traditional building connects to Collinson’s facility to create a seamless sports hub.

The completed sports facility opened to the York St John Students in 2016 and the University currently has an agreement with Rugby League Club York City Knights who conduct their training there in the cold winter months.
